El Nino years

Weaker monsoon, longer dry spells, heat-stress in livestock. Risk to kharif paddy, sugarcane, soybean.

  • Prefer millets (ragi, jowar, bajra) over water-hungry paddy.
  • Mulch and use drip irrigation — save 40% water.
  • Shade-net for vegetables; cool drinking water for cattle.

La Nina years

Above-normal rainfall, flood risk in east India. Good for kharif paddy and groundwater recharge.

  • Raised-bed cultivation, drainage channels and PMFBY insurance before sowing.
  • Flood-tolerant paddy: Sambha Mahsuri sub-1.
  • Fungicide rounds for blast, blight in humid weeks.
